JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS (2001)

March 28 : 7:15 pm 9:00 pm

“A misunderstood masterpiece! A fiendishly clever satire ahead of its time [and] an unabashedly feel-good gag-a-minute romp in which the power of pure friendship saves the day.” – Collider

In this boldly satirical adaptation of the popular 70’s animated series (itself based on the Archie Comics characters), a three-member girl group (Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid) find themselves in the middle of a conspiracy led by an evil record company CEO (Parker Posey) to deliver subliminal pro-consumerist messages through popular music. Though a flop upon its initial release, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS has rightfully achieved cult classic status due to its genuinely catchy tunes, immaculate early-aughties looks, ultra-charismatic cast (did we mention Alan Cumming plays an evil A&R man?), and deeply subversive streak. Written and directed by creative duo Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont — who’d previously jabbed similarly bedazzled satirical daggers through the hearts of the Brady Bunch (A Very Brady Sequel) and the Flintstones (Viva Rock Vegas) — JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS is at once the ultimate expression of glammed-up, buy-buy-buy pre-9/11 pop culture and a sharp-witted takedown of the same.
