Journey to the Black Lodge: Twin Peaks Tribute to David Lynch
January 28 : 5:00 pm – 11:00 pm
In honor of our dear departed David Lynch, Arkadin is presenting a very special night devoted to his most monumental creation, Twin Peaks. We’ll be serving up (damn fine) coffee and cherry pie (from the place where pies go when they die) as we present a selection of highlights from the sprawling masterwork of one of cinema’s most brilliant, terrifying, and strangely loveable artists. All showings are ticketed separately.
5 PM: TWIN PEAKS EXTENDED PILOT — This alternative version of Twin Peaks‘ first episode was aired on European television as a stand-alone movie. Though largely the same as the original ABC pilot, extra scenes directed by Lynch were added to resolve the mystery of Laura Palmer’s death in one tidy package. (Some of the footage was later repurposed throughout the series.) Whether you’ve seen the whole series countless times or are a Twin Peaks newbie, the extended pilot serves as the perfect (re-)introduction to the mythos of the series and an entrancing example of Lynch’s genius worthy of comparison to his most greatest films. Tickets are free but may be reserved in advance.
7:15 PM: TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME — In the town of Twin Peaks, everybody has their secrets—but no one more than Laura Palmer. In this prequel to his groundbreaking 1990s television series, David Lynch resurrects the teenager found wrapped in plastic at the beginning of the show, following her through the last week of her life and teasing out the enigmas that surround her murder. Homecoming queen by day and drug-addicted thrill seeker by night, Laura leads a double life that pulls her deeper and deeper into horror as she pieces together the identity of the assailant who has been terrorizing her for years. Nightmarish in its vision of an innocent torn apart by unfathomable forces, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is nevertheless one of Lynch’s most humane films, aching with compassion for its tortured heroine—a character as enthralling in life as she was in death. Tickets are $9.
9:30 PM: TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN, PART 8 — When Showtime commissioned Lynch to return to the folksy yet deeply unsettling world of Twin Peaks, no one knew what to expect. The result, which would sadly turn out to be Lynch’s final cinematic statement aside from a few scattered shorts, was a strange, sprawling 18-part movie that seemed at once to summarize Lynch’s career and point toward transcendence. Like Lynch’s greatest work, the series was hauntingly alien and bracingly human, and no episode better distilled those contradictions than Part 8 (a.k.a. “Gotta Light?”), an hourlong experimental mindfuck that spans history and the cosmos to offer up a twisted Twin Peaks origin story. By driving deep into the dark heart of the Black Lodge, Lynch managed to create “one of the most artistically daring episodes in the history of American television” (Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, The AV Club). Tickets are free but may be reserved in advance.
