LOGAN’S RUN (1976) presented by Strange Brew
May 1 : 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
This film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew and will feature a pre-film intro by Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina.
Logan’s Run is a masterpiece of pre-Star Wars ’70s Sci-Fi. Based on the 1967 novel by William F Nolan & George Clayton Johnston, the film acts as a pointed critique of conformity, hedonism & obsession with youth and is as cutting today as it was during its original release. Extravagantly produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with massive sets and chic costumes, Logan’s Run was a major success upon its release in 1976 winning the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film and spawning book sequels, a television series and a Marvel comic book adaptation.
Set in the 23rd century, humans live inside geodesic-domed cities in a hedonistic paradise. All aspects of life, including reproduction, are regulated by a central computer leaving the inhabitants to focus on pleasure and excess. There is just one catch. Every child is implanted with a life clock, a blinking crystal in the palm of their hands. When they reach the age of 30 and their crystal reaches its last day, they must report for the “rite of the carousel” and die to perpetuate the utopia.
Any citizen that tries to escape their youthful fate are known as runners. A group of elite hunters clad in black and known as sandmen hunt down the runners to keep the utopian order. One such hunter, Logan 5, is tasked with destroying the runners’ secret sanctuary. However, when the A.I. glitches in assigning his orders, Logan 5 soon finds his life clock shortened as he’s hunted by his fellow sandman. Utopia shatters to dystopia as Logan 5 soon discovers a dark secret about the artificial society.
