MYSTERIOUS SKIN (2004) — 20th Anniversary
June 1 : 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
“One of the 100 best LGBTQ films of all time! A sultry, slowly simmering study of sublimated victimization.” –Slant Magazine
With its complicated plot, multiple unreliable narrators, and subtle interplay between fantasy and reality, Scott Heim’s Mysterious Skin may not have seemed like an easy candidate for cinematic adaptation. But New Queer Cinema titan Gregg Araki fashioned the novel into a mournful, lyrical rumination on lost innocence. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (previously known only as one of the aliens in human drag on Third Rock from the Sun), completely inhabits the role of Neil McCormick, a gay hustler forever haunted by the purity of his childhood relationship with a handsome baseball coach. Brady Corbet proves equally compelling as Brian Lackey, a UFO-obsessed college student with very different memories of his Little League days. The facts lie somewhere between Neil’s hard-nosed cynicism and Brian’s damaged flights of fancy.
But Araki is more interested in the emotional truth of these boys’ experiences — the way their individual coping mechanisms protect them from a shared past even while endangering their divergent futures. Harrowing in its unflinching exploration of childhood trauma but infused with a disarming tenderness that finds transcendent voice in Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd’s dream-pop score, Mysterious Skin remains one of the most moving films of the 21st century and an absolutely vital cinematic experience.
This film is screening as part of Arkadin’s Pride Month-long spotlight on queer cinema.
