NIGHTBREED (1990) – Director’s Cut
June 9, 2023 : 9:30 pm
“Opulently homoerotic…sweaty gay undertones scrubbed from the theatrical cut return more robust than ever [in the Director’s Cut]. It’s kind of perfect that Fox tried to ruin this film in order to cater to safer, duller tastes. They turned the one true Nightbreed into its own mini-Midian, a meeting-place and haven for bloodthirsty genre enthusiasts with no home in polite society.” -Charles Bramesco, A.V. Club
Experience Clive Barker’s original director’s cut of Nightbreed with over 40 minutes of new footage! Multimedia horror maven Clive Barker followed the success of his feature directorial debut, Hellraiser, with this equally surreal effort, based on his novella Cabal. The story involves the plight of Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer), a young man tormented by visions of monstrous, graveyard-dwelling creatures. Seeking the aid of his clinically cold therapist Dr. Decker (played by Canadian horror auteur David Cronenberg) in deciphering his nightmares, Boone becomes convinced that his frequent blackouts are linked to a recent spate of mutilation murders in the area. His frantic search for the truth leads him to the subterranean city of Midian, the dwelling place of a mythical race of undead nocturnal monsters known as the “Nightbreed” — denizens of a world beyond death, beyond the imagination, perhaps beyond anything you’ve seen.
Cutting 20 minutes of studio-mandated footage from the theatrical cut and adding 40 minutes of his own, Barker’s unique and graphic vision is restores his sophomore effort to its rightful glory in this creature-filled, unabashedly queer explosion of the horror genre.
