NOIRVEMBER: Taut, clammy crime thriller with pressure-cooker suspense KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL (1952) — $3!

November 8 : 3:00 pm – 4:45 pm

“Terse and tough, Kansas City Confidential is one of the great lean, mean B crime thrillers, with a bang-up opening, a deadly payoff and a shifting set of identities and alliances that keep pulling the rug from under our hero.” – Sean Axmaker, Parallax View

Kansas City Confidential is a tight, grimy noir about ex‑con delivery driver Joe Rolfe, who gets framed for an armored‑car robbery orchestrated by the ruthless Mr. Big. As Rolfe fights his way through a tangle of masked crooks to clear his name, director Phil Karlson ratchets up the tension with his trademark bruising realism. Filled with intense close‑ups, shocking violence, and a relentless pace, this taut thriller may be the sweatiest movie ever made. Made on a small budget for the independent studio Edward Small Productions, this pulpy pressure cooker was a rousing success that helped define the “heist‑gone-wrong” blueprint for later films, including Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, which borrows from it liberally.
