POOR THINGS (2023)

March 27 : 7:00 pm 9:25 pm

“An instant classic! Mordantly funny, whimsical and wacky.” – IndieWire

The partnership between Emma Stone and Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos has been a true gift to film lovers with a taste for the offbeat and unhinged, and perhaps no film exemplifies their ability to turn bizarre concepts into cracking entertainment better than POOR THINGS. An adaptation of Scottish writer Alasdair Gray’s landmark novel, POOR THINGS twists the classic Frankenstein story into a tale of sexual liberation and feminist subversion. Stone plays Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by an eccentric scientist (Willem Dafoe), who implants her own unborn child’s brain into her body. As she grows up all over again, Bella satiates a thirst for knowledge and experience that leads her to intellectual, sexual, and political escapades that span continents. Told with surreal whimsy worthy of Tim Burton, POOR THINGS is a fever dream with an epic scope.

Why should Jessie Buckley have all the fun? We’re celebrating brides, monsters, mad doctors and more this month with our FEMALE FRANKENSTEINS series, featuring thrills, chills, dark laughs and twisted loves, all culminating with our April 10 premiere of the widely-acclaimed new horror-comedy DEAD LOVER!
