SCHOOL IN THE CROSSHAIRS (1981) — Teenage Dream: Obayashi in the ’80s

August 9 : 5:00 pm 6:45 pm

This August, Arkadin is excited to present TEENAGE DREAM: OBAYASHI IN THE ’80s, a collection of restored films by Nobuhiko Obayashi, the filmmaker behind legendary horror freakout, House (also playing this month). These restorations are made possible by Cult Epics and the American Genre Film Archive.

“[Obayashi] feels like he’s reinventing cinema with every movie he makes.” – Sean Gilman

This early “idol” movie by genre master Nobuhiko Obayashi mixes wacked-out sci-fi, wild optical effects, and coming-of-age drama into a one-of-a-kind experience only Obayashi could provide. School in the Crosshairs stars Hiroko Yakushimaru, then the heart-throb of millions of Japanese fans, as Yuko, a high school girl with telekinetic powers who must defend her school from an extraterrestrial attack. Meanwhile, a new student is using her own psychic abilities to transform the school into a fascistic staging area for an alien takeover of Earth. Offering powerful political commentary with plenty of sci-fi thrills, SCHOOL IN THE CROSSHAIRS is a stylish crowd-pleaser from one of Japan’s most electric auteurs.

“What if Scanners was a live action anime pitting two schoolgirls against each other under charged clouds of Japanese fascist tendencies” – Felipe Furtado
