Shelley Duvall Tribute — 3 WOMEN (1977) w/ Faerie Tale Theatre Pre-Show @ 3 pm
August 3 : 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm
“3 WOMEN is an intense psychological drama laced with satire… a mind-blowing screen achievement.” -The Barb
Though perhaps best known for her work in The Shining and Popeye, Shelley Duvall’s greatest, most unnerving performance can be found in Robert Altman’s enigmatic psychodrama 3 Women, a role which won Duvall Best Actress at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival. In a dusty, underpopulated California resort town, a naive southern waif, Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek), idolizes and befriends her fellow nurse, the would-be sophisticate and “thoroughly modern” Millie Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall). When Millie takes Pinky in as her roommate, Pinky’s hero worship evolves into something far stranger and more sinister than either could have anticipated. Featuring brilliant performances from Spacek and Duvall, this dreamlike masterpiece from Robert Altman careens from the humorous to the chilling to the surreal, resulting in one of the most unusual and compelling films of the 1970s.
3 Women was a favorite of critic Roger Ebert’s who inducted it into his Great Movies series. Calling it Altman’s “masterpiece,” Ebert wrote of the film: “I have seen it many times, been through it twice in shot-by-shot analysis, and yet it always seems to be happening as I watch it. Recurring dreams are like that: We have had them before, but have not finished with them, and we return because they contain unsolved enigmas.”
Before the film, honor the late, great Shelley Duvall with a pre-show spotlighting her Emmy-winning children’s series Faerie Tale Theatre. Pre-show starts at 3 pm.
This film is screening as part of Arkadin’s August-long LOST IN THE DESERT series, highlighting films that explore the mysteries and harsh beauty of the world’s most intemperate landscapes.
