SLC PUNK! (25th Anniversary, sorta) — Outdoor Screening!

August 18, 2023 : 9:15 pm

“A much-cherished cult classic…Its soundtrack is one of the greatest punk albums you will ever own…While the movie puts the dyed mohawks and party hi-jinks up front, at its core it’s a thoughtful documentary masquerading as a fictional dramedy, one that wears its heart on its sleeve.” -366 Weird Movies

SLC Punk! is an artifact from an era when low-budget indie movies were passed with all the hushed reverence of contraband. This is only fitting for a movie about characters from Salt Lake City’s punk scene, living their lives in defiance of their hometown’s restrictive culture. SLC Punk! went on to achieve cult classic status over the years, resonating with so many viewers, in part, because of its fantastic soundtrack. Not many films about punk get the ethos of the culture right, and writer-director James Merendino knew this. When he wrote the film, he faced the tremendous challenge of creating one that would both appeal to punks and educate baby boomers on the subculture. That risk paid off. Not only was the film embraced by iconic punk bands like Minor Threat and T.S.O.L., but it became a gateway into the genre for future generations, with an eclectic soundtrack that serves as the ultimate ‘intro to punk’ mixtape,” featuring legendary tracks from Fear, the Dead Kennedys, the Stooges, the Specials, Blondie, the Ramones, and Minor Threat.

Though it would come to prominence as the opening-night selection of the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, SLC Punk! actually premiered the previous year. So let’s celebrate 25 years of a millennial cult classic!
