Sofia Coppola’s MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006) — 20th anniversary screening w/ alternative ’80s music videos pre-show

April 24 : 7:00 pm 9:15 pm

“A decadent delight! Glorified opulence at its finest with a cotton-candy colored sugar coating.” – Behind the Lens

Written and directed by the great Sofia Coppola, MARIE ANTOINETTE is an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history’s favorite villainess. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France’s young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Feeling isolated amidst the prim-and-perfect gardens of Versailles, surrounded by a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by embracing decadence. A commercial and critical disappointment when it was first released, Coppola’s satirical yet empathetic take on rich-kid ennui has aged like a fine Piper-Heidsieck over the past two decades and is now rightfully embraced for its vibrant fashion, post-punk soundtrack, and too-cool-for-school sensibility. If its reliability as a historical portrayal of pre-Revolutionary France may be somewhat dubious, MARIE ANTOINETTE’s ability to capture the feel of mid-’00s indie sleaze within the confines of a costume drama remains unparalleled.

In honor of the film’s iconic soundtrack, come out early for an alternative ’80s music videos pre-show, starting at 6 pm.
