STL-made ’90s Erotic Thriller COVER STORY (1993) presented by WashU Film and Media Archive — FREE!

March 14 : 4:30 pm 6:00 pm

To celebrate 314 Day, WashU Film and Media Archive (FMA) is pleased to present from our collections the only feature film by local independent producer Gregg Smith!

Partially filmed in the Clayton building that houses FMA’s collections (in the historic Famous-Barr Building), COVER STORY was also shot at Vintage Vinyl in University City, Alice’s and Tucker’s Bar in Central West End and in downtown STL, among other locales. Smith and his company, Kaleidoscope Productions, primarily created advertisements and industrial films; COVER STORY was his attempt to start making Hollywood-style movies right here in St. Louis. The film stars legit movie stars Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) and Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore), as well as a performance by local rapper Ram Luv, an artist signed with legendary STL hip hop label Wiz-A-Tron Records. This screening could singlehandedly double COVER STORY’s Letterboxd logs!

FROM THE VHS BOX:
He’s covering the story of his life… the next deadline could be his own!
Matt McKendree is falling in love. There’s only one problem: the girl of his dreams is dead… or is she? Surrounding her is a cloud of mystery and intrigue. Matt decides to use his journalistic expertise to solve the puzzle. Reen Templeton was a stripper who became the targe of a vicious drug syndicate when she stole a shipment of their merchandise. Matt sets out to piece together her past. As he digs further into his investigation, he becomes more and more obsessed with her. The search leads him through the gutters of society; the perverted counter-culture, the ruthless street gangs, and the all-night sex bars where anything goes. As he gets closer to the truth, Matt finds himself of the run from hired killers determined to keep Reen dead and buried. One man’s darkest fantasy becomes his nightmarish reality in this suspenseful, erotic thriller.
