TEENAGE TUPELO (1995) — with Filmmaker Mike McCarthy in person, sponsored by Left Bank Books
October 28, 2023 : 5:00 pm
Q&A with director Mike McCarthy in-person following the screening. Mike will also be signing copies of his brand-new coffee table book published by Fantagraphics (also titled Teenage Tupelo), dedicated to the film.
In 1995, TEENAGE TUPELO became the first new movie ever released by legendary cult film distributor Something Weird Video. It remains a thrilling cult rarity, which is now accompanied by a brand-new coffee table art book by director Mike McCarthy published by Fantagraphics. An adopted child in real life, McCarthy imagines the life of his biological mother “D’Lana Fargo” circa 1962, with her getting impregnated by an Elvis-like singer named Johnny Tu-Note and being told by her domineering mother to the child away to McCarthy’s parents. In addition to the re-imagined adoption saga, this comedy-drama is told with the tropes of Sexploitation filmmaking and contains a certain amount of Elvis obsession. Starlet Topsy Turvy is showing her forbidden burlesque movie in Tupelo just as D’Lana becomes fast friends with The Manhaters, a girl gang who worship Topsy. D’Lana’s world and the fate of her unborn child get turned upside down when it is revealed that Topsy is an exact look-a-like for D’Lana.
“[A] phantasmagorical autobiography…utterly unique, history’s first postmodern grindhouse film.” -Gregory J. Smalley, 366 Weird Movies
