THE LOVE WITCH (2016) presented by Strange Brew

October 2 : 7:00 pm 9:15 pm

This film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew and will feature a pre-film intro by Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina.

The Love Witch is director Anna Biller’s tecnicolor tribute to swinging ’60s B-horror flicks. The film stars the radiant Samantha Robinson as Elaine Parks, a modern-day witch who uses “Love Magic” to seduce men. Unfortunately, each spell Elaine casts on her male victims causes them to fall so desperately in love that they perish both heart-struck and emasculated. Soon a local police officer named Griff begins investigating a string of suspicious deaths he believes to be caused by a witch, but also finds himself under Elaine’s enchantment.

Shot entirely on 35mm film, it took director Anna Biller over seven years to complete The Love Witch because of her detailed eye for lighting, costuming and set design, before it finally had a limited theatrical release in 2016. The results are a feminist deconstruction of the witch metaphor, poignantly capturing men’s fears of women’s sexuality through a unique female gaze, while also poking fun at the battle of the sexes through playful black humor. The film’s greatest strength lies in the stylized performance from lead actress Samantha Robinson, which can easily be imagined as a role from the late 1960s critiquing both classic Hollywood & the sexual revolution, and earned her a spot on the The New Yorker‘s list of “best film performances of the 21st Century.”

Strange Brew will also present a Season of the Witch pre-show starting at 6 pm.
