“An expressionistic masterpiece of spooky, fairy tale Poe-meets-Perrault imagery” – Commercial Appeal

Famous for inspiring the Joker’s maniacally grinning visage, Paul Leni’s THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is a horror classic in its own right — a dark gothic romance told in haunting German Expressionist style. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS stars the great Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, the son of a nobleman executed for treason whose face is permanently disfigured into a smiling rictus by a band of marauding criminals. Gwynplaine becomes a famous carnival performer whose heart is torn by sweet-hearted Dea (Mary Philbin), a blind girl who loves him unreservedly, and Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova), a powerful and sensual aristocrat who becomes infatuated with him. A tragic tale of love, shame, and social stigma told against the backdrop of James II’s brutal reign over England, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is timeless for its horror and its heart.
