TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992)
May 22, 2021 : 8:30 pm
“A torrid journey through the subconscious of a little girl lost,” per Slant Magazine’s Ed Gonzalez, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me twists the folksy surrealism of David Lynch’s beloved cult TV series into blistering, nightmarish terror. Widely panned upon its original release, the film has slowly come to be recognized as the dark, anguished masterpiece it is. A savagely sensuous examination of the last days of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) before her brutal slaying, Fire Walk with Me is peppered with obscure clues and evocative mysteries that hold the key to Lynch’s expansive, intricately detailed Twin Peaks universe. The film is also a ruthless attack on the hypocrisies of middle-class America, every bit as unnerving as Blue Velvet and even more unflinching in its vision of violence and horror lying just below the facade of small-town life. One of Lynch’s most chaotic and unsettling works, it’s also one of his most transcendent, a deeply spiritual journey through pain and suffering that ends on a final dreamy note of angelic harmony. —Keith Watson
