Although this bizarre work of genius from renowned Romanian fantasy director Elisabeta Bostan is the most popular children’s film in the history of Romanian cinema, Veronica has rarely been screened outside of Eastern Europe. This screening is the world premiere of the film’s first English subtitled version, created by Brian McClelland of St. Louis-based Blip Blap Video (and translated by Sabina Sabau and Mona Sabau), who created this subtitled version in hopes of introducing the film to audiences outside of Romania, thinking that the film has all the makings of a cult classic, if only it could find a wider audience. A musical inspired by French fables, most of Veronica’s dialogue is sung, resulting in a very trippy musical adventure. The story follows the titular orphan heroine—played adorably by 4-year old Luminiţa Petre (under stage name Lulu Mihaescu), all angelic squeaky high notes and impossibly large and emotive saucer eyes—as she searches for a wish-fulfulling magical satchel, in a journey that takes her from her idyllic orphanage into a fantasy world populated with many animal and insect creatures, some helpful and some not so much. Bostan’s vision is spectacular and quite strange—with genius use of forced perspective and stage design—creating a singular masterpiece and a cult classic in the making.
