“✩✩✩✩✩ – It’s the overblown carnality that makes it such a perfect adaptation of the source material, and that still leaps from the screen today.” -Screenhub

Romeo + Juliet will be playing simultaneously in Arkadin’s indoor and outdoor theaters. Choose your favored venue when you buy tickets!

In 1996, Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Elvis) updated Shakespeare’s timeless romantic tragedy for the MTV generation. From the moment the Capulets and Montagues are introduced via the evening news, and the rival gangs engage in a semi-automatic “sword” shoot-out, Luhrmann’s restlessly post-modern interpretation of the teen romance to end all others never lets up. The vibrant colors and costumes, florid “Verona Beach” settings, souped-up pace, watery balcony interlude, and kinetic widescreen cinematography culminate in a neon-lit death scene that alone was worth the Oscar nomination for Best Art Direction. The diverse soundtrack, including 1990s alternative rock, dance music, and a choral cover by Prince matches the equally eclectic cast. Powered by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes’ youthful chemistry in the leads as well as a stable of perfectly cast character actors in side roles including Brian Dennehy and Paul Sorvino as opposing patriarchs, Paul Rudd as Juliet’s fiancé, and John Leguizamo as a scene-stealing Tybalt, Romeo + Juliet steam-rolled to box-office success and thenceforth earned its place as a time-filling staple of edgy high school English classes everywhere.

This film is screening as part of Arkadin’s Weird Shakespeare series, featuring off-kilter adaptations of the Bard’s work.
