ZARDOZ (1974)
May 26, 2023 : 6:30 pm
“The most insane must-see cult classic…British director John Boorman got $1.5 million to make whatever kind of movie he wanted. The result was a true auterurist epic, a film which Boorman produced, wrote, and directed. This is, of course, the 1974 sci-fi flick Zardoz, and it’s the f**king weirdest.” -Kyle Anderson, Nerdist
The ultimate cult science-fiction freakout extravaganza, John Boorman’s Zardoz is at once reactionary, prescient, and hilariously of its era — that era being the deliriously garish mid-’70s, whose groovy sense of style is all over Boorman’s deliciously self-indulgent distant-future fantasy. Look no further than Sean Connery’s infamous costume, which consists of nothing more than a red cloth diaper, thigh-high boots, and criss-crossed Pancho-Villa bandoliers. Set in a desiccated post-revolutionary 23rd century, Zardoz stars Connery as Zed, a member of a roving band of assassins known as the Exterminators, who sets off on a journey to uncover the true meaning of the giant floating stone head known as Zardoz, which his tribe unquestionably worships. What he finds will lead him into the inner sanctum of a secret society known as the Eternals who secretly rule over the Earth. Uber-kitschy effects, philosophical musings, and hyper-sexual set pieces ensue.
